From the Middle — Chapter 5: Anno 1637 — The Pequot War
WILLIAM BRADFORD
The Pequots have fallen openly on the English at Connecticut and assaulted the fort at the river's mouth. Bradford will not take it upon him to describe the proceedings exactly — that belongs to those who were there — but he touches them in general: the parties set out from Connecticut and from the Bay, they are brought to a fort of the enemy, they enter it with all speed, and in the wind it is quickly all on a flame — “and therby more were burnte to death then was otherwise slain.”

What’s Inside
- Anno 1633–1641, in eight chapters — complete: 26,048 words, Bradford's own text exactly as he wrote it, closing with an afterthought entered in his own hand: “I had forgoten to inserte in its place how the church here had invited and sent for Mr. Charles Chansey…” Volume Five takes up the history at Anno 1642 and carries it to the end of the annals in 1646.
- 2 hours 36 minutes of narration — Governor William Bradford himself stands in golden light on the stage and reads his own history aloud, page by page, in a reading room you can follow with your eyes.
- The plates — the Mayflower Compact in Bradford's own hand (facsimile), Halsall's Mayflower in Plymouth Harbor (1882), and Weir's Embarkation of the Pilgrims (1843).
- The fifth book of the Mayflower line — behind it stand Mourt's Relation · The Mayflower Journal · 1622 and Volumes One, Two and Three of the Plantation history, and ahead of it Volume Five, the last of the history — every Mayflower edition at $79.

This is the public-domain text of William Bradford's Of Plymouth Plantation (Project Gutenberg transcription #24950), presented as a talking hologram book, with all modern editorial matter removed and Bradford's spelling untouched. The narration is a performed reading of that public-domain text, made for this edition. No portrait of Bradford painted from life survives, and the book says so plainly in its disclaimer, which stands first, before the book begins. Editor: Franklin Langston.
