Meet the Book
This is the book's own stage: William Edgar Geil stands on the page and reads his own book aloud in Mandarin. In 1908 he led his expedition from Shanhaiguan and walked the whole Great Wall end to end, west past Jiayuguan — the first man ever recorded to do it. Soft traditional Chinese strings play low under the narration, and the barcode rides every frame — scan any moment to come back to this bookstore.

This is the public-domain text of William Edgar Geil's The Great Wall of China (1909), presented as a talking hologram book in a fresh Mandarin translation made for this edition from the public-domain English original — no modern translation was used. Geil died on April 11, 1925, more than a hundred years ago. The narration is a synthesized Mandarin reading (Piper — Huayan) of that text, made for this edition; the narrator on the stage is Geil himself, from his own photographs in the 1909 book, and the book says so plainly in its disclaimer, which stands first, before the book begins. Music: “Chill China Love” by Frank Nora (FreePD, CC0). Editor: Franklin Langston.
