Meet the Book
This is the book’s own stage: Harry Houdini — from his own photograph — stands on the stage, while A Magician Among the Spirits is read aloud in English, in Ryan’s voice: thirty years of séances — the Fox sisters, the Davenport Brothers, Daniel Dunglas Home, Palladino, spirit photography, and ectoplasm — and his break with Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. This is the public-domain text of Harry Houdini’s A Magician Among the Spirits (1924), presented as a talking hologram book in the author’s own words. Every copy opens with an honest disclaimer, and it states plainly what Houdini never stated: at the writing desk he had uncredited help — C. M. Eddy Jr. drafted portions of this book under Houdini’s direction. The investigations were Houdini’s own. The book’s footnotes stand in the printed edition; they are not read aloud in this talking edition. Houdini died on 31 October 1926 — a full century ago. The narration is a synthesized English reading (Piper — Ryan) of this text, made for this edition. Editor: Franklin Langston.
